Master of Science in Genetic Counseling

Program Mission: To provide a quality educational experience in genetic counseling to prepare students to be skilled health professionals who will serve individuals, families, and the greater community.

Program Learning Objectives

  • Develop a deep understanding of genetic and genomic principles defined by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC) Standards.
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to provide genetic counseling services in diverse clinical settings.
  • Effectively communicate information within the scope of genetic counseling to patients, providers, and the larger community.
  • Engage in the research process through exploring the literature, developing research questions, seeking answers, and communicating findings.

  • Students begin rotations during the summer between Y1 and Y2 of the program. Students will spend one semester of rotations at UAB and one semester of rotations at an offsite clinical partner.
    Clinical partners include: Portland, OR; Memphis, TN; Louisville, KY; Huntsville, AL; Mobile, AL; but are subject to change each year. Information about clinical partners is discussed in detail during program interviews.
